Courtney Love - Mono
I admit that I have a thing for Hole, Live Through This was truly a kick-ass, high-quality album. In spite of this I’ve basically ignored Courtney Love’s solo career, for some reason I’m just not interested and all the snippets I’ve heard have been pretty crappy. I think it’s best to remember the Courtney Love of yesteryear, but this 2004 video is an exception. The song itself is pretty mediocre, but stick it out until at least the 1:10 mark and I promise you won’t be dissapointed, (little girls with chainsaws!!!!!!!!).
…Sonic Youth - Cinderella’s Big Score
I read recently about a new Sonic Youth compilation to be sold exclusively at Starbucks, I don’t think it’s out yet but it will be soon. I think it’s a part of Starbucks’ big effort to improve their image, and I don’t fault Sonic Youth for it or give a shit whether they are selling out or not. It is really quite a compliment to be asked to do something like this, and I just hope they are getting paid well for it. The cd is called Hits for Squares, and various celebrities were asked to pick their favorite Sonic Youth tune. They explain their choice in liner notes. Here’s a few of their picks:
Cinderella’s Big Score is one of my favorites, because I’m a sucker for Kim Gordon’s wierd vocals. Plus, it has a really good low-budge video, enjoy!
…Laura Viers - Cast A Hook In Me
Deerhoof - Wrong Time Capsule
Helium - Pat’s Trick
L7 - Pretend We’re Dead
Huggy Bear - Pansy Twist (1993)

While Paul is on gaycation, I thought I’d post a video for Music Video Monday.
Our friends from Eugene/Portland, OR play in a band called The Ovulators… They make power pop, glam rock which kind of reminds me of Elastica.
The girls get saucy in their video, “Troubadour from Another Time”:
…Blake Babies - Out There (1990)
Dude, we really just chopped off our hair for our stupid-ass video!
Perhaps it’s my (young) age, but I never knew that Juliana Hatfield had this whole other band prior to her 15 minutes around the time of “Reality Bites” and “My So Called Life”. My overall feelings about her music are pretty ambivalent, but I was stoked to find this gem. It’s a pretty mediocre song instrumentally, but I suppose it’s catchy enough. It’s a great video, but the way they dance makes me want to slap them! Also, I am pretty sure the whole crayon thing around 2:03 is an LSD reference. Check it out!
to learn more about Juliana Hatfield, check out my previous post about her. It features another excellent video.
also, I’d like to insert audio commentary into music videos for future posts, does anyone know how this is done? we have a microphone, any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
