Jon: The shoes of Marloes ten Bhömer…….

…are (maybe) ugly, but that’s kind of the point.

Dutch shoe designer Marloes ten Bhömer is watching you.
Or rather, she is watching you watching her watching you watching her shoes.

Is the above image sculpture? Is it fashion? Is it utilitarian? Hell, is it even shoes? The answer to all is a resounding yes! And that confusion you are experiencing is right on the mark too. Bhömer has stated that her goal as a designer is to make people “rethink the generic typology of shoes”. In practice, this translates to a piece like the one above, which is “made from one piece of leather, that has been cut and folded into a shoe”. Or, like this example:

Notice how the curve on the front of the boot mimics the natural shape of the human calf, altering the wearer’s silloette in such a way that it quite literally “reverses” the generic typographical assumptions of the viewer.
It also kind of reminds me of a snakes belly after it’s eaten a meal that was a bit of a challenge, which if not anything else, is an image that falls squarely in the postmodern realm that Bhömer has chosen for herself: meals that don’t digest easily.

Of course, none of this is all that surprising once you learn that  Bhömer originally studied as a shoes designer under the watchful eye of pomo designer Alexander McQueen (who, by the way, just debuted a fucking amazing collection).
Now, if only Bhömer would do a men’s line….

“Are these shoes practical?”

“Are these shoes comfortable?”

“Are these shoes fashionable?”

“Are these shoes your favorite shoes?”

What was that someone said about “‘post-modern’ going WAY too far”?
