Jon: Neil Patrick Harris’ Out Magazine cover…

…Hey Faggot! We get it! You can act straight or whatever. Geez, take a chill pill…

The September issue of Out Magazine landed on Gaycondo’s doorstep today. When I unwrapped the opaque plastic wrapping (heaven forbid the neighbors discover we subscribe to [mundane] gay literature… the horror!) I was shocked to see that 90’s 90210 star Luke Perry was on the cover. Is he gay now? Is he famous again? Is he famous for being gay now again? I was so confused until… about five seconds later when I realized that it was not Luke “leather face” Perry but actually Neil Patrick “big brow” Harris on the cover.

For those of you who live in a cave or maybe South Dakota, the child star (Doogie Howser)-cum-broadway star (Rent)-cum-straight sitcom heart throb (How I Met Your Mother) officially came out of the closet recently, to the shock of just about nobody. A perfect example of how far main stream attitudes about queer people have come in recent years, his sitcom (in which he plays an uber-straight lady chaser) continues to grow in popularity, and so far writers have not chosen to make his straight character become gay out of nowhere all of a sudden (*ahem* Ellen). However, the photospread in the new issue of Out clearly shows that while it may be okay to be gay in Hollywood, you better be a fucking butch-motorcycle riding-wrinkle brow having-James Deanish top. Heaven forbid N.P.H. pose as his sort of swishy self on the cover!

The whole spread inside the magazine continues the theme, and I have to say that I am just not buying it. The petite and fragile Harris looks simply ridiculous swilling a beer or leaning up against an old pick-up in full Grease lightning regalia. I would have much more enjoyed seeing that cute little nugget totally fag out for the pictures instead of doing the drag king thing…

It is a shame that when one of the most highly circulated gay magazines finally puts an actual gay person on the cover (Out is notorious for primarily putting straight people on the cover) they present us with this.

Dude, seriously. Isn’t okay that he show that gay men can cover the full spectrum?

Aren’t you trying to enforce a sterotype too? You wanted him in eyeliner and a colorful suit, fine. But the dude is playing Barney – the womanizer, the Fairy Shoeperson on Sesame Street, and Dr. Horrible the nerdy supervillian. Isn’t okay that he has shows that he has range? Isn’t that helpful to other gay actors that haven’t had the balls to leave the closet yet?

And he is proudly team gay in that interview. So, please.

You are right. He is a great actor. He is fully capable of playing a wide range of characters, most of which are straight (side note: I LOVED Dr. Horrible. And yes, the character was straight, but come on, that shit was campy, and Harris was pretty fagriffic in the role).
HOWEVER, this is an interview. Harris should be playing himself. But instead he chose (or was forced to) play an extreme and unrealistic example of masculinity. Did you catch that part where I said he was in drag? Well he was. It is a costume. I call foul.

PS: I never discounted him for the roles in film and on stage he plays, only his “performance” in the Out photospread.

    PPS: Snap!

No more than Nathan Fillion. Captain Hammer? Ahem. And btw, Fillion is about as straight as they come.

“It is a costume. I call foul.”

Oh, really? How can you be sure? Do you know him personally? Do you know his partner David? Isn’t there the slightest possibility that you may be projecting? Just a little bit?

    Hey. Just read this.

The whole idea of the photo shoot was to replicate photos of Steve McQueen. That was the pitch. I saw the pictures, and thought it was a cool idea.

Wasn’t ‘drag’. At all. Not myself either. It’s a pictoral. That’s what happens when you do a photo shoot.

    Sorry to have offended.

Yes, Captain Hammer was played pretty swishy as well, and yes, Nathon Fillion is straight. What does that have to do with anything? NPH can play many types of roles! Yay! I wasn’t saying that being swishy in Dr. Horrible meant anything about NPH’s real life personality. Look up side note in the dictionary sometime…
ppps: I like Dr. Horrible a lot. I shed guilty tears when watching.

Ok, first off, I’m soooo sure you read my blog… (it’s hard to type sarcasm, but, yeah…)
Do you actually know what drag is?? It is dressing up as extreme examples of gender play, often through the use of pop cultural icons as a reference point… so yes, you were in drag… deal with it.

And yes, putting one of America’s only mainstream Out gay actors in straight drag on the cover of a nationally distributed gay magazine that a lot of random middle of the road straights will casually see is NOT good for queers… It’s just like when these magazines put actual straight actors on the covers… but that is a seperate blog post….

    ps: you are welcome.

You know, it’s that tagline that’s so annoying “striving to be an example of normalcy”… ugh. So un-queer. and quite frankly, NOT gay. Since when is the point of coming out to say “hey, I”m just like you…”

PS – also really annoyed that there’s going to be a reprise of 90210 – but this time it uses actual teenage-looking actors…

I think you’re a bit hard on the Doog, Jonno!
He is just tryin’ to McQueen, (Steven)!

Love how so many people hate it when gay men call themselves “normal.” hell, some gay men are, and some are boring, and some are pricks and really annoying, and wanting every other gay man to call themselves queer, when perhaps the only distinction between them and straight men is the person they choose to sleep with. Time to get over your misplaced militancy. Go and save the planet from real threats, such as global warming, instead.

    Hi Jason:
You forgot to mention that some gay men are retarded D-Bags… such as yourself.
I’m kind of sick of debating this post with people who it appears are not even actually reading what I wrote, so, I am now closing comments. unless of course they are from people agreeing with me…
