Jon: “Teenage Stories” by Julia Fullerton-Batten…

British photographer Julia Fullerton-Batten‘s series, Teenage Stories, explores the way which memories are formed in our formative years, both qualitatively and quantitatively. These images seem to be making a statement about the true and imagined emphasis that we put on memories of events from our teenage years.

The girls in these pictures would appear to be placing themselves as giants in what are mostly somber recollections of awkward, embarrassing, frightening, and even violent situations. It is interesting that in these photographs, it is the model, not the circumstance that is made larger than reality. Normally when considering the overwhelming nature of adolescence, it is the events occurring around us that seem dominating and out of our control. Fullerton-Batten‘s photos would seem to be a call to reclaim these negative moments in the past as our own. She seems to be pushing us to overcome and dominate them.
