Jon: July First Thursday Round-up PART ONE: Photographer Ferit Kuyas at Blue Sky Gallery….

The shows at Blue Sky, one of my favorite Portland galleries, have been a little *meh* the past few months. It’s unfortunate too, because as a non-profit they are one of the few major galleries in Portland with curators who are willing to take risks and not simply rely on easy-to-sell decorative art.

This month however, Blue Sky is back on top of their game. The two shows they currently have up for the month of July are both excellent. While I am not shocked to find how much I liked photographer Amy Stein’s highly choreographed images of taxidermied animals invading suburbia (more on her in a later post), it was the Chinese city scape photographs of Ferit Kuyas’  City of Ambition series that I found the most surprisingly alluring.

As a theme, I generally find architectural still life kind of un-dynamic. It usually falls into the trap of becoming either overly precious and decorative (sunsets over San Fran) or hard and documentative (spreads in Surface magazine). While both styles of architectural photography hold a certain level of importance, neither does much to actually inspire a viewer to experience the image at a deeper level.

However, Turkish photographer Ferit Kuyas refreshingly creates a style all his own. Kuyas’ images of the Chinese city of Chongqing feel immediately noir-like and full of secrets.  Paradoxically, where noir style art examines the hidden truths lying in the shadows, Kuyas manages to create a similar intrigue in the overcast vast expanses of nearly empty white space that occupies most of his photographs. It is not hard to imagine the hidden underbelly and tragic stories lurking in the mist of Kuyas’ vision of Chongqing.

I highly recommend heading down to Blue Sky this month to experience theCity of Ambition in person. The large scale of the images as well as the sense of immersion experienced by being physically surrounded by these photographs is well worth the trip. You can also check out most of the images from the show at Ferit Kuyas’ website.

Paul: America has lost its edge!…

…International “Next Top Model” Shows abound!

All sorts of shitty countries have taken a cue from Tyra and started their own Next Top Model shows. While some of the spin-offs seem to be fairly legitimate such as the UK, French, Chinese and (the Heidi Klum hosted) German version, other ones have me wondering how the hell they manage to sell the idea. I mean, do backward ass third world countries really have that much modeling work. Personally, I’d rather be ugly and fat in America than the top model of a place like Kazakhstan. Even in the American version, when a contestant wins you never see their ass again until the next season when they come on and try to convince us they’ve been living this fabulous, jet-setter lifestyle. Yeah right!

All in all there are now 37 versions of this fucking show! Perhaps it wouldn’t seem so crazy if I weren’t so goddamn sick of Tyra Banks and the American version of the show. I think the whole idea is completely tired. It probably doesn’t help than in five years they’ve had ten seasons. There’s no way in hell that there are 10 legitimate “top models” running around because of the show. Rumors are circulating that Tyra will leave the show in the not too distant future. Perhaps some fresh blood will reinvigorate Top Model and convince me to watch it again, but I’m not holding my breath. I think if Miss J Alexander were the new host I’d watch it maybe. Jay Manuel is too much of a yam (i.e., he’s fucking orange).

Here are a few of my favorites out of the international versions…

Brazil

Germany

Italy

Ghana (the first African version)

Hungary (according to Jon, all Hungarian women are smokin’ hot at 18, but by 25 they have turned into haggardly babushkas)

Paul: Delicious Tiger Wine!

…the drink of champions.

tiger-wine1.jpg

This may look like a tacky tchochke but it’s actually a bottle of tiger wine, a beverage made out of the crushed up bones of real-live tigers. Apparently it’s illegal, but that doesn’t stop the Chinese from running tiger farms to produce it. It’s supposed to make you all virile and give you tiger strength. I looked for some on e-bay and found one 16 oz. bottle for $45. I don’t think it’s real though since it doesn’t come in a tiger shaped bottle, and it ships from California rather than China. This is what the seller claims:
“Excellent internal training wine used to augment the results from your training program. Traditionally used for increasing bone density and strength. This formula both regulates blood and chi, prevents stagnation, and prevents damage or latent injury from repeated impact. It also tonifies the body, strengthens bones, sinews and organs, increases energy for training and improves recovery from injury.”
You’d have to be a total douchebag to believe that, but I still wonder what the stuff tastes like. Is there alcohol in it? If anybody knows where I can get the real stuff let me know. I know it’s wrong, but not drinking it won’t bring any tigers back to life, and that tiger would totally eat you if he had the chance. Check out this PSA convincing chinese people to quit making wine out of tigers, I think it’s a little heavy-handed at the end.
