I sometimes feel guilty when I realize I have been looking at online clothing stores all afternoon instead of being productive. Luckily, Mary over at Rip It To Shreds tipped me off about the Met’s online databaseof items from their extensive costume institute. Did you know that in addition to more traditional works of art, the Met also houses thousands of clothing pieces from the past several centuries? Now I can waste a whole afternoon looking at clothing, and mentally justify it as art history education! Yay!
From medieval dresses to contemporary avant-garde runway designers, the entire Met collection is available onlineand is highly searchable based on designer, label, style, decade, color, etc… So far I have spent an hour or two poking around the site. Here are some of my favorite pieces I have found so far….Let me know if you find any buried gems on there too!
